Powers Altschul Consulting
is a small west coast consulting firm recently established by Ed Powers and Andrew Altschul as a result of Ed’s moving to Portland, Oregon from the east coast where he had been a leading human resources consultant to educational institutions.

Ed and Andrew strongly believe that the success of a consulting project depends on the knowledge and skills of the individual consultants assigned to the project, not on the size of the firm or its fees. By working as a team and combining their extensive knowledge and experience, they provide services of the highest quality to a limited number of institutions and do so cost effectively by controlling costs that do not add value. Ed and Andrew are supported by John Kelly, an expert financial analyst, and obtain specialized services as occasionally needed from other cost effective firms.

Ed founded the former firm of Powers Straker and has been a recognized leader in higher education human resources for over 30 years—first as Director of Administration (including human resources) and Associate General Counsel for Harvard University and then as a consultant to over 25 educational institutions ranging from liberal arts colleges like Amherst and Earlham to large universities like Harvard and Northeastern. He has been a frequent speaker at CUPA-HR regional and national conferences. Andrew Altschul is a leading west coast employment law attorney and human resources professional with over 10 years experience. Andrew maintains a separate employment law practice through the Altschul Law Office in Portland.

Ed and Andrew:

  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of employment and benefit laws and regulations.
  • Develop creative and cost effective solutions to complex benefit problems.
  • Negotiate aggressively with insurance companies, and do not accept commissions from them.
  • Develop faculty and staff salary plans that faculty and staff can understand and that minimize perceptions of inequity.
  • Work effectively, with faculty and staff—an essential characteristic of a successful consultant to educational institutions.
  • Provide the full range of human resources consulting services.
